Web Applications Developer

In this role, you will develop and support the technologies used by Sophos’s public facing, multilingual websites. You will work in various development environments to build, deploy and support the web environment and applications.
Possessing good written and verbal communications skills, you will have the ability to explain technical information to non-technical audiences. You will enjoy developing your knowledge, as you maintain and increase your understanding of technologies and systems for web application development. You will be able to plan and deliver work to schedule.
This role is based at our headquarters in Abingdon, Oxfordshire.
Main duties
- Develop systems in line with functional specification, identifying and raising integration issues with manager
- Write, review and amend code in line with functional specifications and departmental guidelines
- Develop and execute appropriate tests on code, resolving defects where appropriate to ensure that requirements are met
- Create documentation in line with department guidelines for all systems developed to enable colleagues to understand the system’s workings
- Diagnose and fix website issues reported by internal departments and assigned by manager, raising any issues and suggested solutions to manager
- Produce estimates on task completion for project manager, so that accurate project plans can be created
- Deliver tasks in line with estimations, raising any potential slippage or risks to project manager and line manager
- Take an active part in projects you are assigned to, contributing to design reviews and cross-functional project team meetings, to enable decisions regarding the most effective solution to satisfy internal and external customer needs to be made
- Proactively identify opportunities to improve security, quality and standards, and raise to manager
Experience and skills
You will need to demonstrate experience of the following:
- Object Oriented development
- Developing Web applications in a version controlled environment
- Troubleshooting live web issues
- Working with a Content Management System
- Writing code, relevant tests and documentation for web applications
- Maintaining or refactoring other peoples code
The following experience is desirable:
- Troubleshooting or maintenance of large scale web sites
- Web Development in a multi-platform environment
- Sharepoint 2007
- Developing with a SQL backend database
- Working within Release Control systems which govern releases to live environments
- Integrating systems using web services
- Web development in Perl or ASP.Net
- Taking part in reviews of other people’s existing code
