Checking file and folder permissions in Windows NT/2000/XP/2003
The icon for a shared folder shows a folder being held out by a hand, as if for sharing. The hand is more visible in Windows NT and Windows 2000 than it is in Windows XP and Windows 2003.
What to do
Checking the permissions on a shared folder
- Right-click the folder
- select 'Properties'
- select the Sharing tab
- check to see if the folder is shared
- select 'Permissions'
- select the relevant user or group
- note what sharing permissions the folder has.
Checking the security permissions on a file or folder
- Right-click the file
- select 'Properties'
- select the Security tab
- select the relevant user or group
- note what security permissions the file or folder has.
