Sophos Anti-Virus for Windows 2000+: failure to install on a Windows XP Pro computer with Simple File Sharing enabled
In order to allow Enterprise Console to perform automatic installation of Sophos Anti-Virus for Windows 2000+ on Windows XP Professional computers in a workgroup, Simple File Sharing must be disabled on the computers involved.
What to do
Disable Simple File Sharing. There is no need to uninstall and reinstall.
- open Windows Control Panel
- click 'Appearance and Themes'
- click 'Folder Options'
- in 'Folder Options', click the View tab
- deselect 'Use simple file sharing (Recommended)'.
Disabling Simple File Sharing enables you to define access for individual shares. This gives greater security than Simple File Sharing, but can be more complex to configure. If, for some reason, it is necessary for you to retain the use of Simple File Sharing, you can install computers manually as described in section 11 of the Startup guide (Protect computers with manual installation).
