Enterprise Console: remote task scheduling and installation on Windows 2000/XP/2003 computers
When you run the 'Protect computers wizard' in Enterprise Console, a list of computers onto which you can install is created. This list comprises those that can have a scheduled task assigned to them by the Microsoft Task Scheduler.
Computers that cannot be assigned a task by the Microsoft scheduler can have the installation performed manually. You can then manage them using the Enterprise Console.
The requirements for remote installation are listed below. The Windows components may have been disabled as part of a system security policy. Check before changing your network setup.
What to do
For computers to be available for remote installation, the following requirements must be met:
Windows NT/2000/XP/2003 computers
When the Enterprise Console performs a remote installation on Windows NT, Windows 2000, Windows XP and Windows 2003 computers, it attempts to access the target computer and create a scheduled task. To do this:
- The following services must be started:
- Task Scheduler Service
- Remote Registry Service
- Server Service
- Computer Browsing service
- Workstation Service
- An administrative C$ share must exist on the target computer.
- The account specified during when you run the 'Protect computers wizard' must have administrative rights over the target computer.
Windows XP computers
In addition to the requirements for Windows NT/2000/2003, the following is necessary on Windows XP computers:
- If you use blank passwords, the policy 'Limit use of blank passwords to console logon only' must be disabled (the use of blank passwords is not recommended).
- In a Windows XP workgroup, if Simple File Sharing is enabled, you must disable it.
