Sophos Anti-Virus for Windows 2000+: despite a successful update, Sophos AutoUpdate reports "Update has failed"

Despite a successful update in Sophos Anti-Virus for Windows 2000+, the Sophos AutoUpdate shield icon can sometimes display a white cross on a red background and the message "Update has failed" can be present in the system tray. However, the shield icon will remain blue, as Sophos Anti-Virus is actually up to date. This can happen even if there has been a successful update from the secondary update location.

This will only happen where:

The cause is that Sophos Remote Management System (RMS) is not available in the Sophos webCID. As a result, Sophos AutoUpdate cannot locate the package that it is seeking.

The message will stop being displayed the next time the computer updates from the primary location.

What to do

Company webCIDs contain RMS. So no computer that uses a company webCID for updates, rather than the Sophos webCID, will encounter this error.

Alternatively, provided you ensure that Sophos Anti-Virus is up to date, no further action need be taken.

If you need more information or guidance, then please contact technical support.
