Closing services and processes in Windows

This article describes how to shut down Windows services and processes.

When removing a virus, Trojan or worm on Windows, you should shut down as many programs, services and processes as possible. You must then open a command prompt. This will minimize the chance of the virus continuing to run and locking files.

What to do

1. Closing open programs

Shut down any programs that you have open, saving data before you do so.

2. Shutting down services

Some services will not stop. Leave them running. There is a good chance that they will not be associated with the virus, and that you will still be able to remove it.

3. Shutting down processes

Again, some processes will not stop, but this might not hinder disinfection.

4. Opening a command prompt

After closing all possible programs:

You are now ready to start removing the virus.

Note: When shutting down processes, try to keep Task Manager open. If you shut it by accident, press the Ctrl, Alt and Del keys, and select 'Task Manager' to open it again.
