Advisory: Sophos Anti-Virus on Windows 2000/2003 servers with Terminal Services request reboot when upgraded to version 5.0.5 R2

This product is nearing retirement. We strongly recommend that you upgrade in order to ensure your protection stays fully up to date.

When the Sophos AutoUpdate component of Sophos Anti-Virus for Windows 2000+ is updated on a Windows 2000 or Windows 2003 server using Terminal Services, the server requests a reboot. An immediate reboot is not necessary, and this message can be safely ignored.

Technical details

When Sophos AutoUpdate is upgraded to a new version, the installer tries to uninstall the old version of Sophos AutoUpdate on that computer before installing the new one.

This error is displayed with Terminal Services on Windows 2000 and Windows 2003, if several users are logged on to the server at the same time (for example, one logged on at the console and two logged on remotely). When the installer broadcasts a message to terminate the Sophos AutoUpdate monitors, it is not informed of the termination of the monitors in the various sessions. As the monitors could not be terminated, it then requests a reboot.

If only two users are logged on, the installer does not request a reboot.
