EM Library 1.2: running with Microsoft Management Console 3.0

This product is nearing retirement. We strongly recommend that you upgrade in order to ensure your protection stays fully up to date.

When attempting to install EM Library version 1.2 on a computer running Microsoft Management Console 3.0 (MMC 3.0), the following error is returned:

MMC cannot initialize the snap-in.

This is a known problem. It was fixed in EM Library version 1.3.

What to do

  1. Where possible, upgrade to EM Library version 1.3.
  2. Otherwise:
    • Where possible, install the EM Library console and library on a computer that is not running MMC 3.0.
    • As a workaround, install EM Library console on another computer running an earlier version of MMC (version 1.2 or 2.0). Then do one of the following:
      • Install a remote library on the computer running MMC 3.0.
      • Install a local library and configure it to maintain Central Installation Directories (CIDs) either on the computer running MMC 3.0, or on another computer on the network.

Technical details

At the time of writing, MMC 3.0 is only distributed with Windows Server 2003 R2. Therefore, you will only see this issue if you are running this particular server software with EM Library 1.2.
