Sophos small business solutions: error 'You do not have sufficient privileges to run the Sophos Anti-Virus...'

With Sophos small business solutions, in some circumstances, Sophos Control Center, version 2, may display the following error message:

You do not have sufficient privileges to run the Sophos Anti-Virus main application.
You are not a member of one of the Sophos groups. In order to be able to launch this application, you must be a member of SophosAdministrator, SophosPowerUser or SophosUser group. Please contact the Administrator.

This can be caused by one, or more, of the following:

  1. The user launching Sophos Anti-Virus is not a member of the correct group.
  2. An installation of Crystal Reports 8 has blocked access to two registry keys.
  3. The SID of the computer has been changed since the installation of Sophos Anti-Virus.

What to do

1. Incorrect group membership

The user trying to launch Sophos Anti-Virus, version 6, is not a member of one of the following groups:

Ensure that the user is a member of one of the above groups.

2. Crystal Reports 8 has blocked access to two registry keys

The Sophos Anti-Virus service does not have sufficient rights to access the following registry keys:

This can be as a result of installing Crystal Reports version 8.0. Later versions are reported not to be affected. A vendor knowledge base article (c2008211) details the problem and a workaround.

3. The SID of the computer has been changed

The SID of the computer was changed after Sophos Anti-Virus version 6 was installed. A knowledgebase article gives details.

If you need more information or guidance, then please contact technical support.
