Advisory: Information for customers accessing Sophos sites by IP address
Hardware upgrades to improve the resilience and scalability of our web servers will shortly take place, starting on 30 April 2007. This will affect the small number of customers who connect to downloads.sophos.com using an IP address. As a result of this change, instead of connecting to a single static IP address, any computer connecting to downloads.sophos.com will now be connecting to one of a large and ever-changing pool of IP addresses.
Note: The majority of users will not be affected.
The customers affected will be those that:
- access downloads.sophos.com via its IP address
- have IP address filtering in place at their firewall
for example, some customers who fetch IDEs directly from the Sophos website.
Reminder:
- Wherever possible, you should use DNS names (such as www.sophos.com) rather than IP addresses (such as 194.203.134.151) to reach the Sophos websites in scripts or configuration files. This will ensure that you are always using the correct web server.
- Sophos may use other servers worldwide to deliver our websites, so as to provide a better service.
Important: If you use IP addresses to access the Sophos websites, your virus protection may be affected.
What to do
You may need to reconfigure firewall configurations to allow the traffic, or change your client configurations to use an http proxy.
