Enterprise Console: installation fails with error 'Setup failed to configure the server'

Issue
During the installation of the Sophos Enterprise Console the following error message is generated:

Microsoft SQL Desktop Engine; Setup failed to configure the server

The installation then rolls back.

What to do

The installer will have created the related Sophos Enterprise Console.msi.log file, and we recommend troubleshooting the error with this log-file and the msi log-file troubleshooting guide.

Alternatively, if you do NOT have PureMessage installed, you can clean up the failed installation and re-install, by carrying out the following the instructions below. (If PureMessage IS installed, following these instructions could damage its installation.)

  1. In 'Add/Remove Programs' ensure that 'Sophos' and 'Microsoft SQL Server Desktop Engine (SOPHOS)' are removed
  2. Ensure that C:\Program Files\Sophos doesn't exist, rename it if it does exist.
  3. If C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL$Sophos exists rename it.
  4. Re-run the installer.
