Issue
Sophos Control Centre displays error message, Could not create EMLibrary proxy instance

Sophos product and version
SBE Control Center 2.0.1

Operating system
Windows 2003 SP2

What to do

First of all, work through the troubleshooting steps in the knowledgebase article Sophos Anti-Virus SBE, version 2.x: opening Sophos Control Center displays error. If you continue to get the above error message, follow the procedure here.

  1. Click OK to any error messages that you may have open, and then close Sophos Control Centre.
  2. Browse to C:\Program Files\Sophos\SCC\Library\Index
  3. In 'Notepad', open db.inf
  4. You will have a line similar to this (probably containing random letters/numbers/symbols as shown here):
    • 00000002<random characters>
  5. Decrease the first non-zero number, so you will have something similar to this:
    • 00000001<random characters>
NOTE: if the first non-zero digit is an 'A' then change it to a '9'. If the first number is a '1' then change it to an 'A'.
  6. Save the file.
  7. In 'Notepad', open db2.inf, and repeat steps 4-6 above.
  8. Save the file.
  9. Reopen the Control Centre. You should no longer get an error regarding the Proxy Instance, you may, however, get a warning that you have not downloaded an update for a while. Click on 'Update now' within the Control Centre to begin a download.

Note: If the procedure given here does not work the first time, you may need to repeat it 2 or 3 times.
